Important Update: We’re Moving — But the Story Continues
The Garifuna Cultural Center is currently closed as we transition to a new location. While our physical space is temporarily unavailable, we remain committed to preserving and sharing our cultural heritage. In the meantime, guests can join us for the Echoes of the Garifuna Tour — an immersive experience in Roatan’s historic Punta Gorda community. This guided tour offers an introduction to Garifuna history, a traditional communal lunch, and visits to cultural landmarks.
The Garifuna are an Afro-Indigenous people with deep ancestral roots in West Africa, the Caribbean island of St. Vincent, and Central America. After surviving forced exile by the British in 1797, the Garifuna established their first Central American settlement in Punta Gorda, Roatan — a site that remains a vital historical landmark today. Our communities are still vibrant across Honduras, Belize, Guatemala, and Nicaragua, preserving centuries-old traditions through language, music, dance, cuisine, and oral storytelling. The Garifuna are known for our resilience, rich spirituality, and deep connection to the sea and land. Our cultural legacy is one of survival, pride, and unwavering unity.
